Hello everyone for the last time!
First of all, I would like to thank to my instructor Müge Mengü Hale, who helped me in this journey. I aimed to share all my knowledge and experiences as a modern dance lover. As I mentioned in my first article, age does not determine whether you succeed or not. It all depends on how you feel, what you want, where you are in life. So, if you want to get to know dance academies, state performances and more, here, through this blog I analyzed what is waiting for us in the capital, Ankara. I hope we gave you an idea about discovering new performances and experiences. I have enjoyed every trip, every research and interview so far. There were certain stops in this process. Among them, we experienced many different things from visiting art galleries to interview with Sunal Family. I hope I can inspire you with new experiences! Thanks again to all my readers!

It is very important for individuals to cope with the major problems of the age and to have an intellectual mindset for their development. In this context, it should be ensured that the contemporary arts have a widespread appearance in societies through state policies and incentives. In this context, the importance of state conservatories and art centers cannot be ignored. After the ballet began to appear in Europe, Turkish ballet has started to be implemented through foreign instructors. Foreign instructors have been replaced by Turkish dancers such as Evinç Sunal and Hüsnü Sunal and contributed greatly to the development of Turkish ballet. Honoredly, the Sunal family members who served in the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, presented the masterpieces Coppelia and Giselle to the audience in Ankara. Zeynep Odabaşı, the chief choreographer of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, who is the daughter of Evinç Sunal and who puts the work on the stage, has expressed great interest from the audience with Giselle.
After the Sunal family migrated from Thessaloniki, they settled in Adapazarı and later in Ankara. Evinç Sunal's father was a soloist of Ali Koç Gürkoç Ankara radio. He is one of the first bassists of Ankara to come to Opera. On this occasion they sent their daughter Evinç Sunal to the conservatory. Evinç Sunal, with Coppelia Ballet in Turkey, is one of the first leading Ballet dancer. In her interview, Zeynep Sunal has said that she has been in contact with the ballet ever since she was born, but that her family never supported her doing ballet. Since her family did not support, she entered the conservatory examination unaware of them. Zeynep Sunal, who started at the age of 8, graduated four years early from the conservatory and was selected as the Great Child. After graduating at the age of 15, she went to court to work at the opera and increased her age by court order. Zeynep Sunal, who played her first leading role at the age of 16, thinks that the opera was in its golden years and that the education at that time was much better than now. Atatürk, in 1934, gave a speech in Turkish Grand National Assembly uttering these words: “…The measure in a nation's recent change is its ability to conceive and comprehend the change in music… It is necessary to gather national feelings and immediately process them according to general musical rules. This is the only way for Turkish national music to be able to rise and place itself in universal music."
It is known that culture, music being in the first place, has an immense role in development of countries. The relation between dominant culture and a country's improvement especially in the musical field is an evidenced case by social scientists. Turkish music culture has taken yet another turn with the proclamation of the Republic. In essence of this process, there lies nationality, modernity in administration, universality in its quality. If you are wondering how Turkish society evolved in terms of Music and Performed Arts, here is a timeline below: https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/2036906 Ankara State Opera and Ballet is preparing to present to the art lovers Tchaikovsky's music with William Shakespeare's great love story Romeo and Juliet after 17 years. Romeo and Juliet's world-famous sad love story, the children of two families who have two enemies each other and who are connected to each other with great love at the first moment, will be presented with the magical rhythm of the ballet on May 4th at the Opera Stage.
This week you can enjoy Turandot in Ankara State Opera and Ballet hall. I can hear you asking what Turandot really is. Well, it is more than classical opera!
In the legendary times, Beijing was ruled by Emperor Altoum, the son of the heavens. Princess Turandot, who sees herself as holy and godly daughter, asks three nobles to the noble youngest who wishes to marry her in order to avenge the death of their grandmother years ago, and their answers are unprofitable. The people who had become accustomed to these shows began to enjoy a wild taste gathered in front of the palace. The handsome Iranian Prince, unable to answer the questions correctly, will be executed in the morning. The guards whip out the ebullient people from the palace. Elder King Timur, who was exiled from his country, was among the avoiders. Meanwhile, a young man approaches and helps him. The young man was Calaf, whom he had been seeking for a long time. Father and son are in this joy. Liu, who has been loving Calaf for a long time, is guiding Timur. People are following the preparations of the ritual is doing. Turandot view above the stairs. It rejects the public's desire to forgive the Iranian prince. Calaf was in love with Turandot. Decides to enter the competition. His father, Timur and Liu, can not prevent him if they try to dissuade him. In the meanwhile, the cries of the prince executed and the insistence of Ping, Pang and Pong cannot deter Calaf from doing this. The palace of Calaf opens through the gate and disappears. If you wonder what happens next, right after the first part, you can enjoy it on 29th of May in the State Opera and Ballet scene! Ottoman culture and ballet together!
Harem, from 1998 to the present, is the only Turkish ballet piece in the history of Ottoman history. It describes the intrigues of young women whose fate is determined by the power struggle in the Ottoman palace and the actions of the fighting forces. Reji and choreography State artist is Merih Bahar Çimenler and decor and costume design belongs to the world-renowned history researcher Alexander Vasilliev. In the story, there exists a Sultan who must be absolute and omnipotent. However, he is a weak person and his life is indeed threatened by his mother. Because Valide Sultan sees him as an obstacle in realizing her own passions, she prefers to move to the throne with a young granddaughter whom she can carry easily in her hands to hide all power. If you are as curious as I am, the performance is going to take place on 25th of May in Ankara Sate Opera and Ballet Hall. Do not miss it! Dear modern dance lovers, here is my first visit to a tango performance in Ankara. A few weeks ago, I think, I opened a publicity mail from the state opera and ballet. What is called selectivity in perception was that I immediately saw the name of Astor Piazzolla. Then I put it in my mind to attend this special event. For those who are interested in Piazzolla or tango itself, it is a great opportunity for you that is waiting in the capital, Ankara. Let's have a look at the details and my very own personal experience about the show! My first trip was to Ankara State Opera and Ballet Hall located in Ulus. The Exhibition Hall building of Şevki Balmumcu, constructed as a result of an international competition opened in 1931, was transformed into an opera house by Paul Bonatz in 1947-48. You can buy tickets on the internet or at the counter. As soon as some of the performances are on sale, their tickets are running out in a short time. You must be a follower. The dates and times of the performances are available on the website. Opera, ballet and concert are all accompanied by a warm atmosphere. The Sergievi building of Şevki Balmumcu, constructed as a result of an international competition opened in 1931, was transformed into an opera house by Paul Bonatz in 1947-48. A clean workmanship and a completely indigenous material in the Opera house, mostly traditional Turkish housing architecture is encountered with the successful comments. At the beginning of these, there is a wall and suspended ceiling made of wood in the foyer and in the audience hall with stained-glass windows in the mezzanine grid of the foyer. At the very first place, an attendant checks your tickets and redirects you to the performance hall. The saloon at the entrance is usually full of people dressed properly as a sign of respect and gratitude. For most of the performances the tickets expire in less than a minute! Lucky me, found two tickets for MDT (Modern Dance Community) Tango's performance. This was my first time visiting the State Opera and Ballet Hall and watching a modern dance performance. At the entry on the left there were posters regarding the current and following performances. When I first heard the name 'tango', I was expecting two people dancing just like what we watch on TV. However, this was a modern dance show with a tango spirit. The Community (MDT) continues to perform regularly and on national and international tours with their works that they have included in their repertoire and periodical representations in MDT Ankara Opera Stage. Besides its own internal education, MDT has managed to reach young people with modern dance through various activities and interviews at many universities and led to the opening of Modern Dance Department at many universities. It was a good representation of my first modern dance experience. It's up to you whether to like it or not but still it is worth appreciating the performance. I liked the choreography during the song 'oblivion' which I can feel very intense emotions along with the choreography. If you like choreographer Ricardo Fernando this show will be a little more special for you. This was the very first moment of the show. The music on the show was the following: moderato mistico, libertango, balada para un loco, allegro molto marcato, adios nonino, escualo, milango del angel, oblivion, primavera portena, la misma pena, concierto del angel, la cumpersita. It was the first modern dance show I've ever seen. I don't really understand the dancing figures of tango. At least I thought I'd be listening to the music of Piazzolla and I left myself to music. Some pieces were played live, some were playback. The stage was sometimes crowded, sometimes solo, sometimes only 3 people, sometimes a few pairs. The bodies fluctuated with each rhythm made the songs visible. The dancers in solo dances were particularly successful. There was a situation where there is a synchronic problem in collective dances or a discrepancy because the arm lengths are different. It is also a fact that the show was very attentive, very harmonious and took positive responses from the hall. I want to talk about the last piece, especially the finale. The salute begins before the last piece was played, and you think it's over. The curtain comes down to the dancers' knees and 'la cumpersita' begins to play. The dance continues, but we only see foot figures. Different! The choreography on display is a special song on every song, so it's not part of a single story. Each piece has a separate story. This also requires keeping the attention alive, which can be boring or tiring after some time. Both the duration of the performance (50 min) and song-dance harmony prevents boredom. Last but not least, the show feels better when you watch it with your beloved ones! Especially if you like Piazzolla, this show will be a little more special for you like choreographer Ricardo Fernando. If you are interested the show will be on the stage on 18th of May, as well. Check it if you want to escape from the crowd and enjoy your quality time.

My modern art journey has started a couple of years ago with folk dancing during high school. After learning its techniques and performing caucasian style dance I decided to change my perspective to a different style. A year ago, during my exchange period I started taking bachata courses in the heart of Latin world, Barcelona. I had the oportunity to practice it with professional Latinas. For me it was never too late to learn someting new. “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot Age does not determine whether you succeed at, or even enjoy any of these things. It all depends on how you feel, what you want, where you are in life. So, if you want to get to know dance academies, state performances and more, here, through this blog let's analyse what is waiting for us in the capital, Ankara. From opera to contemporary dance here is a wide range of choices for you. I believe that you will have the opportunity to explore Ankara from a modern dance perspective.
